Spotlight On: Stile BK
Torino-Italy
Stile BK's nomadic philosophy extends not only to the style of its beautiful rugs but also to its business approach. Behrouz Kolahi created Stile BK in 2004, in Italy, aiming to become an international company. A year later, the company introduced its rugs to the U.S. market, launching at the New York International Carpet Show. Behrouz has been a committed GoodWeave member ever since.
Born in Shiraz, Iran, Behrouz moved to Italy in 1976 to study architecture at the Politecnico University in Turin. An expert in antique carpets, he opened a gallery at No. 52 Via Mazzini in 1981. It quickly became a point of reference for Turin’s interior design community.
In 1987, Behrouz introduced his first series of contemporary carpets, featuring labyrinthine patterns in designs that showcased the uniqueness and quality of handcrafted products. The result was an unprecedented exhibition entitled “Labyrinths on the Rugs,” which for the first time presented the unadulterated symbolism of the labyrinth in the weave of a carpet.
Behrouz has applied his creative and technical skills and aesthetic sensibilities to products exhibited in Harrods and other high-profile venues. In 2002, Berhouz achieved international recognition thanks to acclaimed artist Christopher Farr, who included him in his book, Contemporary Rugs―Art and Design. That same year he decided to share his skills by teaching a course in carpet design at the European Institute of Design in Turin.
Berhouz has designed collections on an exclusive basis for names like Tappetificio Nazionale Radici and MCC Collection. Success and recognition moved the artist to establish his own brand, Stile BK, which uses ancient weaving techniques to give form to the modern versatility of Italian design. Experimenting with natural materials such as silk, wool, hemp, nettle, cactus and aloe, while incorporating different cultural influences in its designs, Stile BK has created simple yet beautiful designs that reflect a nomadic style, giving rise to modern icons that complement an array of contemporary furniture.
