GoodWeave releases videos on workplace rights for Bangladesh garment workers
October 2, 2024GoodWeave is dedicated to promoting workers’ rights and improving working conditions across global supply chains. With generous funding from UK International Development from the UK government, we are pleased to share four new educational videos for garment workers in Bangladesh.
These videos, available in both English and Bangla, are designed to inform workers about their rights in the workplace and ways to address common risks.
The videos focus on key aspects of decent working conditions in the garment sector, including working hours, overtime, leave, protection from harassment, child labor prevention and young worker protection. These videos help workers understand their rights and the steps they can take if those rights are violated. Each video includes contact information for the Bangladesh worker welfare hotline and two other worker helplines.
The videos were developed in collaboration with Awaj Foundation, a worker- and women-led grassroots organization based in Bangladesh, with whom GoodWeave collaborates since 2020. Videos are an important tool for educating workers, particularly in environments where access to formal training may be limited. They offer a simple and engaging way to convey complex ideas, making them accessible to a wide audience, including those who may have low literacy levels. The videos are being used during in-person training sessions on worker rights that Awaj is delivering for garment workers in Dhaka and Chittagong, two key production hubs in Bangladesh.
According to Awaj staff, the videos are an excellent addition to the training sessions. They emphasize key points and help workers retain specific information. The videos also proved a great way to answer workers’ frequently asked questions.
A garment worker shared: “The video on maternity benefit is very helpful to understand how it is calculated, such knowledge sharing training should be repeated as sometimes we forget what we learnt or what is in [the] labour law.”
The videos are available to workers through Awaj’s meeting hubs, as well as on GoodWeave’s website and YouTube channel, to reach an even wider audience.
