GoodWeave hosts its first workshop in Bangladesh
March 30, 2024On March 4, as part of a field visit to Bangladesh, GoodWeave International hosted a workshop titled “Mitigating Risks of Child Labor in Ready-made Garment Supply Chains”.
The workshop took place in Dhaka and brought together representatives from 13 groups, including international apparel brands and grassroots organizations. The workshop provided an opportunity for GoodWeave to present findings from a recent study on child labor risks in subcontracted and upstream Ready-made Garment (RMG) supply chains. The participants engaged in group discussions to develop intervention ideas, addressing specific child labor risks identified by the research. Each group outlined proposed activities, stakeholder involvement, risks, feasibility, sustainability, and long-term impact of the interventions.
The workshop was a valuable moment of collaboration and reinforced commitment to improving working conditions and protecting vulnerable children in the RMG sector, recognizing the need for multi-faceted solutions, and collective action in addressing complex social issues.
The time spent in Dhaka also presented an opportunity for the GoodWeave team to meet with project partners, including the Bangladesh Labour Foundation, Awaj Foundation as well as brands and suppliers involved in the projects. The team also visited worker communities, RMG factories and connected with additional local stakeholders from the non-profit and public sectors.
The visit to Bangladesh and the partner workshop were part of two projects GoodWeave is currently implementing in Bangladesh, supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the UK Home Office Modern Slavery Innovation Fund.
